For weeks now, Justin and I have been drumming up fall activities that we want to do for our first year with Kaeden. With September coming to a close, we wanted to partake in the timeless tradition of apple picking, which I was completely excited for!
Believe it or not, I had never gone apple picking and the thought of romping around an apple orchard with our son was just something I didn’t want to pass up. With September coming to a close, we decided to take a spontaneous trip to Royal Oaks Farm Orchard. It was a beautiful hour and a half drive up north, ending on the most quaint country road. Pulling up to the Royal Oaks Farm Orchards, it looked like it had been plucked right out of a picture book (even Old McDonald would be jealous).
The orchard was like a wonderful maze of green and red with flecks of yellow and orange, and luckily there were still plenty of apples left for the picking.
There were lots of families around enjoying the same adventure as we were so we ventured off into the secluded row of trees to take our time searching the trees for apples and to get a moment alone with our son. It was the perfect way to ring in the fall season.
Reflecting on our adventure, I realize now that it was more than just about apple picking. Walking through the rows of apple trees, with our bags in hand, just the three of us reminded me that these moments are so important. Our calendars have been so full lately that we haven’t had much family time and stealing this moment to do a family activity was just the boost we needed. It’s easy to lose sight of what matters most but no matter how much we have on our plate, we need to make a conscious decision to take a step back from all the chaos of life and really enjoy these times.
Life gets hard and raising a family comes with its struggles but these moments alone that we get to build a loving relationship with our son and teach him the important things … its these memories that get me through the chaos.
